Nick Barton
Nick began his rowing at Whanganui Collegiate school and continued at Otago University while he completed degrees in Commerce and Physical Education. After finishing rowing in 2004 Nick became the Regional Development Officer in Waikato and Head Coach at Sacred Heart Girls in Hamilton. Nick later spent time abroad which included coaching at Oxford University before moving back to New Zealand in 2010 and coaching at Villa Maria in Christchurch. Post Canterbury earthquakes, Nick accepted the Head Coach role at Sacred Heart Hamilton once more and returned back to the Waikato. After 5 years with the school, Nick shifted to St Paul’s Collegiate before accepting a positions as assistant coach at Waikato RPC. Nowadays Nick is a Rowing NZ Pathway coach, and you can find him in Cambridge with his wife Nicky, his dog Jojo and his cats Jack and Ned. His love of sport, the outdoors and collaborating with driven and ambitious people is what gets him out of bed in the morning. Rowing and coaching have always been a part of his life and he’s coached, managed and governed within the sport at school, club and international level. Nick has coached numerous NZ teams and this will be Nick’s 6th NZ U19 campaign and he can’t wait to get started.
Jo Shotter
Jo was born and raised in Christchurch. She enjoyed completing a PE degree at Otago alongside a representative hockey career with Otago and Canterbury. Jo first began coaching rowing in Canada at Shawnigan Lake School and on return to NZ Jo taught PE and coached hockey and rowing at St Kentigern College for 6 years. During this time she coached the Junior Men’s 8+ in 1997, 1998. Jo then went to the UK to coach for Kings School, Wimbledon (1999 -2001). She stepped away from the sport for a while during which time she focused on raising her three children. In 2019 she took up the Director of Rowing role at Westlake Boys High School. Jo has coached the Auckland Light Blues, North Island U18 women’s sweep (2018), U18 men’s sweep (2019) and NZ Women’s U19 Sweep four and double scull (2021). Giving young athletes the passion and skills to future pathways is what drives her coaching purpose.
Hannah Starnes
After rowing for ten years at club, U21 and RPC level, Hannah started coaching at Wellington College when she was working as a cardiac physiologist at Wellington Hospital. It was here she developed her passion for coaching and bringing people together. She then moved back to her hometown and became head coach of Nelson College for Girls in 2015 where she remained for 4 years. During this time Hannah helped with coaching the RPC alongside two coach development programs run by Sport NZ and HPSNZ. Hannah’s first coaching role with RNZ was the South Island U18 team, followed by trans-Tasman University team and U21s. In 2019 Hannah was selected to coach the Junior women’s quad which went on to win gold in Tokyo at the Junior World Championships. In September 2019 Hannah moved to Cambridge to develop and coach the junior program at Waikato Rowing Club, then became head coach in 2021. Hannah was again selected to coach juniors in 2020 and was the lead U21 coach in 2021. Hannah is a passionate and driven person who enjoys being part of a team and empowering her rowers to get the most out of themselves on and off the water. For the past three years Hannah has been involved in RNZ coach programs, including the Prime Minister Scholarship coaching group, and the RNZ Career Coach programme and was part of the first cohort of Te Hapaitanga which is a HPSNZ women’s coaching group for aspiring HP coaches across all sport codes. Hannah’s other passion is art and she is a self-employed artist specializing in private commissions and murals based around the environment.
Guy Williams
Guy has recently returned to full time rowing coaching taking on the Director of Rowing role at St Andrews College in Christchurch for the past two seasons. Last winter Guy also stepped back into representative coaching after being selected to coach the NZ U21 men’s sweep team. Guy has an extensive history of coaching which he began doing when he was 17 years old. After leaving school Guy coached in the UK, New Zealand and Australia. Guy left Australia after a successful 2012 season with Kinross Wolaroi school. Along with 5 medals at the national championships Kinross were the top school in the points competition at the NSW School boy Head of the river, NSW State Championships and the National Championships. On arrival back in New Zealand Guy coached for the Southern RPC for the 2013 & 2014 seasons. In 2014 he also coached South Island U18 men’s sweep and U21 women’s sweep crews for RNZ. Guy stepped away from full time coaching for a while in 2014 where he spent time completing his building qualification and assisting other rowing programmes including Southport School in Gold Coast, Auckland Diocesan and St Kentigern’s College. From taking some time out he found his passion for rowing is working with young adults, teaching them the skills required to continue in the rowing journey beyond school. Guy is very excited to be involved in his first U19 Campaign with a great group of coaches.
