Brian Smith
Brian was a coxswain himself and after time away from the sport reconnected with rowing after his son and daughter started school rowing. He has been fortunate to be around some great coaches that have shared their extensive knowledge and have helped shape his coaching ability. In 2008 Brian was asked to help coach Timaru Boys Rowing, at that time there was a squad of five boys, which grew to a squad of 12 in 2012. 2012 was one of Timaru Boys most successful seasons which culminated in two boys going on to be junior trialists and successfully rowed for NZ at the Junior world rowing champs. In the last few seasons Timaru has grown there numbers to around 25 and maintained the success at Timaru Boys. During this time Brian has always upskilled and attended RNZ workshops, seminars and coaches conferences and modules. He has also coached South Island U18s a number of times. Brian understands the importance of establishing a team culture influence and direct the culture of the organisation to create a positive environment and everyone connected to it. Developing sport-specific knowledge skills, abilities and mental preparation to facilitate positive experiences.
Axel Dickinson
Axel started his rowing at Petone Rowing Club in 2005 and rowed at age group and elite level for NZ rowing out of the Central RPC. He started his coaching journey out of Petone RC in 2012 while recovering from injury as the sole coach of a small yet successful program of 14 with 5 of going on to row for NZ at some level. He returned to elite level rowing but upon leaving HP rowing fell back into coaching a group at Petone from 2016-2018. After the 2018 season Axel left for the UK to be head coach of Hinksey Sculling School a charity outreach program based in Oxford. This culminated in seeing the men’s club qualify for Henley Royal Regatta for the first time in their history and qualifying a boat for the final of the Britannia Challenge Cup. In 2020 Axel returned to NZ, coaching at St Paul's Collegiate before joining Waikato Rowing Club this season as the junior coach helping integrate school leavers into the club and operating as part of the wider coaching team that saw some good success at the National Champs with many athletes going on to representative teams. Coupled with that Axel was the Director for the Hamilton Girls Rowing team this season and saw the team produce their best results on record, culminating with two titles at Maadi Cup 2022. Axel has started attending HPSNZ workshops to further his knowledge base and has coached the North Island U18 team in the past.
