Under 19 Development Team Racing at the International Rowing Challenge
The NZ U19 Development team will begin racing at the International Rowing Challenge (IRC) on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti-Ann Arbor, Michigan (USA) on Tuesday morning with 1500m time trials. This regatta is a reinvention of what was previously a three-way regatta with the USA, Canada and Mexico. Renamed the IRC, the regatta is providing a first taste of international racing for developing U19 level athletes. After Tuesday’s time trials, the crews will be seeded into A and B finals over 1500m, with six boats in each final. Points are awarded for each race, with an overall champion team crowned at the end of the regatta. The event is taking place alongside the US Rowing RowFest National Championships, so it’s created an action packed 9 days of racing on Ford Lake.
There are 12 teams racing, eight from the USA, two from Canada and one each from NZ and Mexico. Each team is made up of nine athletes, with four male, four female and one coxswain. The crews will race a 1500m time trial in each boat class to determine the A and B Finalists for each event, with all athletes having to sweep and scull to cover the following events:
Mixed 8+, Coxed 4+, Coxless 4X, Pair, Double and Single.
The NZ team arrived into the USA in the early hours of July 9th and have had a few days to get used to the heat, different boats and the race course. The teams are staying on the Eastern Michigan University (EMU) campus and training out of the EMU boathouse. The team is looking forward to racing and you can follow the racing either via the livestreaming or results page.
