St Patrick’s College

The SPC Rowing Club is part of the Wellington Rowing Club with St Mary’s College and Onslow College. We use the Wellington Rowing Club facilities for trainings, and when the conditions are right we head out on the harbour for coaching. The season commences in Term 3 with the Learn to Row Programme for novice rowers culminating in a trip away rowing on the Whanganui River.

The major regatta of the season is the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships (Maadi Cup) held in March. This is the biggest sporting event in the Southern hemisphere.

Other major regattas are held on Lake Karapiro, near Cambridge, with some smaller local regattas held on Wellington harbour.

SPC Rowing aims to:

• Develop your rowing skills
• Raise your fitness and stamina levels to a high level
• Build good team skills
• Compete successfully at regattas
• Have fun, training and competing, in a great team sport

Rowing is a ‘true’ team sport. The commitment of the rowers to hard work is vital! Each in the boat is dependent on the others, all doing the same thing at the same time. The team is only as good as the ‘weakest link’. This means if one boy is constantly missing training, or not taking the hard work seriously, their rowing mates will be affected.
