Tertiary Study

The journey to High Performance Rowing provides exciting opportunities for athletes seeking further qualifications beyond school.

In New Zealand, there are two main pathways:

  • Domestic Pathway – training and living in New Zealand while potentially studying at a local university or polytech.
  • International Pathway – typically attending a college in the USA, Australia, or the UK.

Both pathways contain opportunities for athletes to gain substantial financial support towards gaining qualifications, but athletes should also consider a wide range of other factors when deciding their next step.

The goals of Rowing NZ are:

  • Maximise the Domestic and International pathways as opportunities for our athletes to develop towards becoming a successful elite rower
  • Support athletes with information to help decide which option is best for them
  • Support athletes to continue to develop as they transition between the two pathways

This guide below is intended to provide information that will help inform decision-making for athletes and their families.
