World Rowing Cup 2 - Day 2

  • 17 Jun 22

Day two of the 2022 World Rowing Cup 2 saw six New Zealand crews take the water in blustery tail wind conditions that Poznan is famous for.

First up was Matt Dunham in the men's lightweight single. Matt was in heat one and lined up against Poland, Australia, Uruguay 2, Belarus, and Germany. Coming through the 1000m there was little separating all six crews with the New Zealander sitting in 5th place. It was during the second 1000m that Matt showed his dominance and pushed through the field to finish in first place, four seconds ahead of Belarus in second. Matt will now race in the A/B semi-final on Saturday.

The women's four of Phoebe Spoors, Beth Ross, Davina Waddy and Catherine Layburn drew heat three and lined up against Canada 1, USA, and Canada 2. The Kiwi's had a bowball over Canada 1 and USA coming through the 1000m and stretched their lead over the second half of the race. The crew finished in first place, two seconds ahead of the USA in 2nd, followed by Canada 1 in 3rd and Canada 2 in 4th. They will now line up in the A/B semi-final on Saturday.

Stella Clayton-Greene, Georgia Nugent-O'Leary, Kristen Froude and Kate Haines drew heat one of the women's quadruple sculls and lined up against Switzerland, Australia, Germany and France. The progression for this event was first two through to A Final, remaining through to repechage. The Kiwi’s came 5th place and will contest the repechage later today.

The women’s quadruple sculls lined up in the repechage just 5 hours after racing their heat. Crews had to finish in the top two to progress through to the A final. The crew put down a gutsy effort in their repechage but were unable to take a top 2 spot. The Kiwis will now contest the B final to be held on Sunday.

The men’s quadruple sculls of Jordan Parry, Brook Robertson, Phillip Wilson and Jack O’Leary competed in heat 1, lining up against Ukraine, Netherlands, China, Poland 2, and Czech Republic 2. Progression for the men’s quadruple scull was first to the A final, remaining crews to repechage. The Kiwis put down a solid performance and claimed 4th. They will now contest the repechage on Saturday.

James Scott lined up against Australia, Czech Republic, and Azerbaijan in repechage 3 of the men’s single scull. A top two finish was needed to progress through to the A/B Semi-final. James crossed the line in 4th place and will contest the D final on Saturday.

Kirstyn Goodger put her best foot forward in the repechage of the women’s single. Kirstyn lined up against the USA, Norway, Belarus, France and Ukraine and needed a top 3 finish to progress through to the A/B semi-final. Kirstyn managed a 5th place finish meaning she will progress to the C final to be held on Saturday.
