  • 29 Jul 22

Day 4 was a busy day on the water for our U19 and U23 athletes in Varese, Italy. The day started with six U19 heats and two Repechage and ended with three U23 semi-finals.

Phoebe and Alice Wallis were the first of the New Zealand crews to compete, finishing fourth in Heat 1 of the U19 Pair, this takes them through to the Repechage. This was a great international debut for them and good to hear the Kiwi supporters were nice and loud cheering these two on.

The Men’s U19 Four of Henry Kirk, Nicholas Bryan, Adam Wilson and Cameron Macgillivray were fourth which sees them through to the Repechage.

The crew of Georgia Thomson, Annabelle Knowles, Emma Averill and Charlotte Lightfoot looked very strong throughout the race in Heat 2 of the Women’s Quad. They finished third which sees them through to the A/B semi-final.

In Heat 2 of the U19 Women’s Eight, the crew of Nicole Vance, Orla Fitzgerald, Grace Farrell, Siena Snow, Emily Bowden, Jemma Burrowes, Holly Lill, Georgie Bethell and Cox Annabel Wynn-Williams were third taking them through to the Repechage.

The NZ crew was fourth in the U19 Men’s Quad Repechage 1. The crew of Samuel Wilson, Connor Bacchus, Ashley-James Fitzgerald and Oliver Leach, will now compete in the C Final.

The last race of the day for the U19s was the Repechage of the Men’s Double with Edward Botherway and Dylan Burton who were second and are now through to the quarterfinals.

Our U23 Women’s Double crew of Sophie Egnot-Johnson and Madeleine Parker were sixth in their A/B semi-final which sees them through to the B Final.

Jack Ready, Ben Olifiers, Jonte Wright and Benjamin Mason who make up our Men’s U23 Quad were second in semi-final A/B, just behind the top qualifier Italy. The quad will move through to the A Final where they will come up against a strong field including the defending champions from the Czech Republic.

To wrap up the day for the U23s the Kobe Miller was third in the U23 Men’s Single C/D semi-final and is through to the C Final.

Due to forecast adverse weather conditions, the World Rowing Executive Committee has brought the U23 race programme forward on Friday 29th July. An updated schedule can be found here.
