​2022 Rowing NZ U21 Team Announcement

Following the conclusion of the U21 National Trial at Lake Karāpiro from 19 – 21 April 2022 a New Zealand U21 Squad has been named. The team will travel to Australia for the Trans-Tasman Regatta taking place from 16 – 18 June 2022.

2022 U21 Coaching Team

Ian Bright, Women’s Sculling (U21 Lead Coach)

Ian moved to NZ from Canada in 2009.He spent 6 years coaching at Auckland Grammar School, assisting with the Maadi Cup and Springbok Shield winning crews in 2011 and a number of other successful crews.In 2016, Ian became the Head Coach at Sacred Heart College for the 2016/2017 season, before being appointed Assistant Coach at Auckland RPC and then Head Coach one year later.He has just completed his first year as the Head Coach at Takapuna Grammar School and is looking forward to building on their successful season over the next few years.

Alongside his school coaching, Ian has been heavily involved in Rowing NZ teams and coach development opportunities.He coached the North Island U18 team in 2011 and 2012 before becoming a selector for the team between 2013 and 2018.He also coached the NZ U21 team from 2011 to 2015, where 14 of his crews won gold and the team won the Rusty Robertson trophy in 2011, 2012 and 2015.Ian then coached the Junior Men’s sculling crews in 2016 and 2017, as well as the U23 Women’s sweep crews in 2019.In addition, he has been involved in numerous professional development opportunities including Sport NZ’s Performance Coach Advance programme, Rowing NZ’s Prime Minister’s Scholarship coaching group, and several High-Performance Sport NZ initiatives such as the Campaign Coach Leadership programme and the Core Knowledge programme.Recently Ian has been appointed as the Rowing NZ Coach Developer for the Auckland region.

Anna DeLong (Women’s Sweep)

Anna began her rowing at Epsom Girls Grammar in Auckland when she was a student at the school. Anna has also rowed for North Shore Rowing Club and the Auckland RPC and was part of the NZ U21 team in 2011-2012.

Anna started coaching alongside her own rowing in 2014 with Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland. Over her three seasons as the lead novice coach the group consistently produced medal winning performances. Anna shifted to Auckland Grammar for a season working with the U18 boys before becoming the lead women’s coach and then head coach at North Shore Rowing Club. In her past three seasons coaching at North Shore, she has coached a number of crews to podium places as well as winning nine different national titles across intermediate, club and senior for both men and women. During her time coaching in Auckland, Anna has been involved in the regional development programmes assisting with the winter RPC trial groups and coaching the Auckland Light Blues U17 team to Australia in 2018.

In 2021, she was the New Zealand Women’s World University Coach and is currently part of the Career Coach programme with RNZ and Core Knowledge programme with HPSNZ.

Megan Glenn (Men’s Sweep)

Megan first began coaching at St Peter’s School, Cambridge in 2008 when she finished as a rower there herself. After coaching at St Peters and completing her Bachelor of Media Arts, Megan moved to the UK where she was a rowing coach and boatman at Kings School. She then moved to Hinksey sculling school in Oxford in 2017 in the head coach role before moving back to NZ. During her time in the UK she was assistant manager and reserve coach for the British J16 rowing team. When Megan returned to NZ she took on the role as Senior boys coach at St Peters school where she has been since 2018. Megan has since moved into the role of Assistant Director of Rowing at St Peter’s. Megan has coached the North Island U18 team, assisted with RPC winter training and coached the 2021 Trans-Tasman Men’s Eight since her return. Megan is part of the Career Coach programme with RNZ and Core Knowledge programme with HPSNZ.

Kirsty Dunhill (Men’s Sculling)

Kirsty first started coaching in 2001 at Takapuna Grammar School, where she held the Head of Rowing role for 3 seasons. Kirsty then moved to Auckland Grammar for a further three seasons as director of rowing before becoming the Auckland RPC manager in 2009. Kirsty stepped away from the sport for a few years when she had her two sons but still helped out some school programmes when she could. Her family moved to the Waikato and Kirsty was able to pick up a part time role as Waikato Rowing Development officer which included strategic development to help build up club programmes and upskill coaches in the region. 2015-2017 Kirsty was head of rowing at Cambridge High School alongside her learning assistant role in the school. Kirsty moved to St Peters to assist with the senior girls and that season culminated in St Peters winning the Jubilee Cup (GU18 8+) for the first time. Kirsty’s family then shifted to Dunedin which presented Kirsty with the opportunity to coach Otago Boys and work at the school as a learning assistant. It presented new challenges and great opportunities which Kirsty has really enjoyed, including a chance to coach the Otago Interprovincial team and the winter development team. Kirsty has now started a new role as head coach with St Cuthbert's College and is living in Cambridge with her family.Kirsty is part of the 2nd intake of the Career Coach programme with RNZ and coached the NZ Trans-Tasman Women’s 8 in 2021.Along with coaching the NZ U21 Men's Sculling team in 2022, Kirsty is also a NZ Junior Selector for 2022.Kirsty is a well-known voice of rowing, having commentated for 11 years at both Lake Karāpiro and Lake Ruataniwha including at Maadi cup and National Champs. Over her 18 years of coaching she has also had the opportunity to coach for regional and national teams including NZ Juniors in 2004.
