2015 World University Games - Silver, men's lightweight single

In 2016 Toby Cunliffe-Steel competed in the men's lightweight double with Adam Ling at the Final Qualification regatta in Lucerne in May with the hope of qualifying for the Rio Olympic Games however it wasn't to be with the duo finishing sixth in their A final. In 2015 Toby raced at the World University Games and won a silver medal in the men's lightweight single.

Toby first represented New Zealand in 2009 when he raced in the New Zealand U21 team at the Youth Cup. Toby has raced for New Zealand at the U23 level in both the men's lightweight four (2012) and the men's lightweight double (2014) finishing 8th and 9th respectively.

In 2007 Toby went through a challenging time when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Thankfully due to the medical team at Tauranga and Auckland Starship Hospital the tumour was successfully removed.
