Westlake Girls Rowing

Westlake Girls has a proud history in rowing, competing at the Maadi Cup since 1983, with considerable success. Westlake Girls Rowing is affiliated to the North Shore Rowing Club, currently there are over 40 rowers in the programme. The ethos echoes the school’s wider vision, focusing on providing an environment that takes a long-term approach to athlete development and fosters a love of the sport, while challenging and supporting students to pursue excellence on the water. Westlake Girls Rowing benefits from extensive support from school leadership, with Principal Jane Stanley herself a former New Zealand Rowing representative.

About the role

Reporting to the Director of Sport, the Head Rowing Coach will be responsible for:

  • Leading a team of coaches across Novice to U18 level.
  • On and off water coaching
  • Creating training programmes suitable to the development of young female athletes.
  • Leading a culture focused on long-term development, athlete retention, and performance.
  • Allocating resources across the programme.
  • Collaborating and communicating with Sports and non-Sports staff to ensure the rowing programme aligns with the school’s strategic vision.
  • Collaborating with the Westlake Girls Rowing Committee to ensure effective management of core operations, including, logistics, fleet maintenance, fundraising, and financial management.
  • Administration tasks associated with the running of the rowing programme.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking applicants that meet the following criteria:

  • Significant coaching experience and/or experience as an athlete at a high level in rowing (ideally both).
  • Excellent technical coaching knowledge and skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High levels of organisation and planning.
  • Passionate about rowing and helping students to develop as athletes and people.

This role is part-time with hours to be negotiated with the successful candidate. Both teaching and non-teaching applicants will be considered.
